UNEXPECTED DETAILS Light, Form and Color in Twenty-first Century Japan

Describing his buildings, the German architect Mies van der Rohe famously stated “God is in the Details”. In a similar way, I believe that an understanding of the spirit of Japan and its culture can be found in the details of the Japanese physical environment with its curious mixture of an overpowering cacophony of visual stimuli and the delicate precision of exquisite design. I find myself looking up to note the precise lighting pattern in a hotel lobby, down to the illustrated manhole covers beneath my feet, and pausing before both the serene gray wall of an Ando building and the fluorescent blare of Akihabara. The images in the exhibition were captured in Japan over the past few years with a series of Nikon digital SLR cameras, and printed on a variety of media using Epson and HP inkjet printers.
